Sheng ri kuai le Julia Renee DeSmet!

That means:  Happy Birthday Julia Renee in Chinese!  Julia hit the big 12 on Wednesday of this week.  We celebrated with an Australian barbecue at our neighbors house, with a couple of other Australian families, followed by a trip to Baskin Robbins with 7 kids all piled into our minivan.  We enjoyed some good ole American style ice cream and sang Happy Birthday to her in Chinese.  After I filled them full of sugar we found a huge inflatable slide in the parking lot of the plaza and they burned off their sugar buzz for an hour or so. (Thank the lord no one threw up!)  She also received a really beautiful dragon statue from our driver, Mr. Lou.  Julia is born in the year of the dragon, which if you read about it explains a lot about her personality!  The Chinese truly believe that your Chinese sign really does reflect your personality and who you are compatible with in life.  My Ayi and I had a whole conversation on this one day.  We looked up everyone in the family to compare and it was pretty accurate really.  Julia's of course is one of the most powerful and lucky of the signs.  They have natural charisma and tend to be the center of attention in social situations.  They are giving, intelligent, and know exactly what they want and are determined to get it.  This sign is truly blessed, and are considered to be lucky in love (oh dear lord).  Also, incidentally their lucky number is 1. (This was her soccer number since she was 6 years old)
Julia seemed to have a good day despite the fact that she was feeling a little homesick for her Dad (who was in the States for business meetings) and her "family birthday dinner".  Grandma always makes whatever the birthday girl wants and Julia was really hankering for her ham, potatoes, corn bread and fruit salad!!  Also she wanted to hang out with her cousins!
Kelly returned on Thursday and we celebrated again with dinner and a zebra cake with pink icing!  She also got to open all the presents that were shoved into her Dad's suitcases and imported (or smuggled) here from the US.  She was pretty excited about all the gifts and on behalf of her and myself we want to send a big hug and thank you for all of the good loot.  She will continue to be a fashionista here in Beijing thanks to all of you!
PS.  To my momma........thanks for all of the goodies that you sent.  I am rationing my tea better this time and the girls really loved their calendar (photo's included).  Also, Ella's favorite chips were still intact and she loved the Mexican candles (lol)!  xxxoooo
Our driver is the best!  Here is Mr. Lou and Julia with her dragon!
Ella lighting the Mexican candles......she had them on her cake last year and she asked her Grandma "why did you put Mexican candles on my cake?"  WTH????  She loves them though!!!

Julia Renee now a 12 year old!

The Chinese can count to 20 on their fingers.  This represents 12 (kind of like a thumbs up loser sign).

Make it a good one!

This kid is windy like her Momma!

The pink zebra cake!  It was delish, and if you know Julia well, you would know that her favorite colors are pink and zebra. (yes I just said zebra was a color)

Ella and her boyfriend Nyall................for all of you older folks, he is in the boy band One Direction.

Julia and her BF Harry!  This better be as close as you get to kissing a boy anytime soon young lady!
