Heading off to school.......
The downside of living here. I do realize that not everything is going to be perfect everywhere you go BUT....it is highly disturbing when you have to send your kids to school in air filtering masks. It has unfortunately become a new norm for us to check the daily air quality index and prepare accordingly. You can see the haze in the background. Tonight we will pray for some wind so it can hopefully blow out some of this pollution.
It definitely puts a damper on my running schedule. Today, the ladies that I run with all met in the clubhouse to do our training on treadmills. Oh well....maybe tomorrow will be better!
My Beauties
Christmas In January!
Kelly spent a week in the US on business and made a trip to my mom's house to load up with a bunch goodies. He filled up 3 huge suitcases with dog food, cake mixes, drink mixes, protein powder, home made peanut brittle (for Ella), peanut butter, cereals and other yummy treats. He also brought home all of the girls Christmas presents.
I let them each open 1 present when he got home and the rest were wrapped and put under the tree the next day. Julia opened her beloved iPhone 4 and Ella opened a cute little necklace from her Grandma and Grandpa. Later that night I came downstairs to find Ella sitting alone, in total silence, looking at the necklace in her little hands. I asked what was wrong, which brought on tears and sobs of "I miss home" and "I want my Grandma". It was utterly heart breaking! It was the first breakdown that any of us have had and it made us all go to bed with heavy hearts that night.
The girls had school as usual the next day and then came home and we celebrated Christmas with a home made Chinese meal, compliments of our fabulous Ayi, Xiao Liu. Then we gathered around the Christmas tree (that I left up for this occasion) and we opened our presents from home. The kids were so glad to get some clothes from home (as it is very hard to find things here). It just felt good to see the kids smile and reminisce about home and family and friends. We went to bed that night feeling much happier and although we couldn't be with everyone for the holidays we felt loved and very blessed! Thank you for all of the great gifts! We love you all!

Doomsday Preppers
We broke records here in Beijing last week..........and not the good kind! The air pollution was so horrible here that it literally looked like we were in a brown haze and it smelled awful. It burned your throat if you were outside for too long. The US Embassy puts out an air quality index and it reached way into the 700's. They say that over 200 is extremely unhealthy so that must make the 700's what.....death????
We have air purifiers in our house and the school has an amazing air filtration system. We have also acquired some great masks that block out 95% of pollutants. (Thanks mom!) We actually wear them when the pollution goes too high over 200 (which is several times a week). Today we were over 400 again so the kids went to school looking like they should be on an episode of Doomsday Preppers. It was very surreal to watch all of the kids ride bikes down our street wearing masks to go to school, but glad that they all have enough sense to wear them. The girls don't even fight us about wearing them! They can't stand the smell, taste and feel in the back of their throats from the pollution. I'm not gonna lie....I sure do miss home on days like this and all of the fresh air at our house in the country. I will NEVER take that for granted again! So if you would all do me a favor, when you are done reading this please stick your head out the window and take a deep breath of fresh air and enjoy it......and if you want to know what it is like for us, go stand behind a couple of big diesel trucks, with lousy exhaust systems, and have them rev their engines about 20 times and then take a deep breath....good stuff huh????!!

This was one of the AQI readings from last weekend. This is why we made world wide news! |
This is a picture of the sun out of my bedroom window. Can you see it?? It is covered by a thick brown haze of pollution. |

The Harbin Snow Festival
This weekend we made a trip up to the frozen Tundra of Harbin, China. Famous for their Snow and Ice Festivals. It is almost in Siberia it is so far North! The temperatures were a balmy -24 degrees Fahrenheit. We went up there with Kelly's co-worker (who also lives across the street from us) the Cheung family. We jetted out early Saturday morning and were bundled up and ready to make like a new baby and head out by 1:30pm.
With so many layers on, that we could hardly bend, we made our way to the first stop, the Snow festival. It was absolutely amazing what these people can do with a pile of snow. The artistry of it all was just out of this world. I watched as men chiseled the snow with tools to get every inch of the sculptures as smooth and as detailed as can be! All of the snow there was so white and beautiful...(not all yellow and dirty like in my yard). We were there for a couple of hours and left just at sundown. You could feel the temperatures start to plummet with each passing minute!
From there we made our way to the Ice Festival. It literally is a winter wonderland made out of snow and ice. It's an ice city complete with castles, bars, stores, slides and sculptures all carved from ice and to add to it they put beautiful glowing lights inside of them. We looked around, slid down the slides and took as many pictures as I could. I had to keep my camera in my coat, so that the battery wouldn't run out from the frigid temps, and I had to take my mittens off to take pictures. After several dozen pics my fingers were protesting! As a matter of fact, our last hour there was pretty miserable. I felt as though I could lose some toes over the deal so it was definitely time to go!
Ella had really wanted this fruit on a stick that was coated in a clear sugar coating so we were going to grab that and run like a herd of turtles in a wind storm. Out of nowhere this very nice Chinese lady came up to Ella and handed her these sugared apples on a stick and said, "here this for you beautiful American girl." Ella replies, "No thank you.....how much is it?" The Chinese lady says, "NO, NO you no pay. I am just giving it to you. You are beautiful." I jump in and whisper to Ella, "just take the darn thing and say thank you!" Ella (in her chipmunk voice) says, "thank you". The lady walks away happy and Ella turns to me and says, "MOM! There is a nibble taken out of this." Yep, there sure was! Ella.." I am not eating this when someones nasty teeth have been on them." She is my germaphobe mind you. I guess I can't blame her......I wouldn't have eaten it either. We threw it out and promptly found the fruit vendor and made Ella a very happy girl with a stick of sugared strawberries. (Which she asked for in perfect Mandarin).
The car ride back to the hotel was painful, as our digits started to thaw and burn like we were sticking them in hot coals. Once we were in our room our whole family sat on the edge of the tub and soaked our hands and feet! It was so good to be inside!!! I am soooo glad to say that we have been there and done that, but I for one am totally over it!
